Home > Hackers - Hacking

The threat of computer hacker has grown a lot since the advent of internet. There are many people who with the intention of gaining access to the system break the security measures. Hacking is the process to gain an access to the computer through unauthorized means. And the person who does this is called as a hacker. The intensions of hacking may be different and may range over a wide variety like to gain monetary benefits, intrude check the credibility of the network security.

Usually the term hacker was used to define the people who had the curiosity to know how the system worked. It was at a later stage that the term hacker acquired a negative meaning. The actual hackers whose intention is not to damage or cause any harm call the other people as cracker. There is a slight difference between both – the hacker and the cracker.

The hacker may some time also be the network security expert who is trying to check the security measures that are employed or in some cases the hacker may also be the person system administrator to check the loop holes in the system. But for any purpose the person should have a good deal of knowledge regarding the working of the computer system.

The knowledge should be primarily based on the operating system internals, design and architecture of the operating system and the various types of operating system that can be used for the computers including the Network Operating Systems. It is also required to have knowledge of the file system that is used for the storage of the data over the storage media.

But the computer forensics acts as a threat to the hackers and the crackers. The computer forensic expert should be well versed with the procedures that a hacker may employ in order to exploit the computer system. The hacking of the computer system can be carried out from simple breaking of the passwords to gain access to the system or even the corruption or exploitation of data.

If the data or the information is secret and sensitive like in the case of defense departments of a country; then even reading of the data by any person may cause great damage and subsequent consequences.

In such cases even the access to the data is also considered as the crime. The computer forensics employs detailed techniques to track the changes and the logs of the user who has accessed the data or intruded the computer system. The computer system which is priory installed with the Intrusion Detection System may provide assistance in dealing with the hackers.

But if the person who is accessing the system has an advanced level of knowledge then even such systems may fail to provide affecting warning. The hacking of any computer system is the sequential process and same is the matter with the process of computer forensics.

If the hacker is clever enough to erase the tracks left by him then there can be difficulty for a computer forensics expert to find the evidence and provide a legal prosecution and produce the culprit in the court of law. The computer forensics expert acts as a police and the hacker as the culprit. Even the insurance companies can benefit from computer forensics.
