Computer forensics has been approved as legalized branch wherein appropriate evidence can be sought in order to frame the culprit in a court of law. The purpose of establishing a subject that deals extensively with computer crime investigation was needed. Hence in the year of 1984 federal Bureau of investigation started a Magnetic Media Program to response to a computer crime.

The history of modern computers is not long. Hence the subject came to interest recently. The FBI was responsible for the creation of a team known as CART – Computer Analysis and Response Team. The team was extensively involved in the computer crime investigation. In the year of 1993 First International Conference on Computer Evidence was held. The momentum for computer forensics started after some serious cases made news. Mostly after the implementation of internet and it’s usage in banking applications there are many computer related crimes.

In the year of 1995 International Organization on Computer Evidence was formed; that is IOCE. A major boost to computer forensics was observed when the G8 countries declared that "Law enforcement personnel must be trained and equipped to address high-tech crimes". This conference was held in Moscow. In the year of 1998 March G8 appointed IICE. The purpose was to create international principles for procedures.

The procedures in relation digital evidence where to be prepared. An Interpol Forensic Science Symposium was held in the year of 1998. The examinations and investigation of computer crime increased and crossed a milestone in the year of 1999. In that year FBI CART case exceeds 2000 cases. A total of 17 terabytes of data was examined. The investigation laboratory was established in the ear of 2000. This was the first ever FBI Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory. In the year of 2003 a new record was achieved when the FBI CART case exceeds 6500 cases. A total of 782 TB of data was examined.

The information regarding the complete working of the operating system is needed. There are many organizations that provide certification on the basis of the performance in the examinations conducted. There are many legal proceedings that are carried out in support of computer forensics. More over computer forensics software and hardware products are making rounds in the market. The business opportunity in the market of computer forensics related services is booming large.

Even the personal computer users utilize the services of computer forensics professional to investigate the criminal cases. There are government organizations and departments that utilize the services of computer forensics services. In Department of Defense – DoD also there are many opportunities for computer forensics professional. The task of the professional forensics expert is to curb the activities of hackers and crackers and minimize the crime rate computer world. The criminal activities of professional terrorists can be monitored and they can be booked on the basis of evidence. The ethical behavior should be followed even in this field.
