Home > Data RemananceData Remanance deals with the residual information. In general the meaning of remanance can be explained as the magnetic induction that is present even after the removal of magnetic field. Usually there is some piece of information left behind. It is also possible that after completely erasing the data over the storage media there still exists the possibility that erased data may be reconstructed. There are certain methods that can be discussed here in relation with data remanance. There are several methods that are used for safeguarding the data against the any leakage of information that is considered as sensitive. Some of them are discussed here. Clearing is one of the methods that can be used to clear the sensitive information. It is done in such a way so that the data from the storage media in any case it is not possible to reconstruct the data from any of the methods. There is assurance that the information is cleared in proportion to the sensitivity of the data or any information. There is none of possibility of reconstructing the information back to its normal form or by the usage of any data recovery tool set. Even it is not possible to get the data by utilizing the advanced diagnostic tool kits etc. The other method is Purging. It provides the removal of sensitive data or information from within a system. The removal can be done over different storage devices also. The data or information once purged from the system cannot be reconstructed or recreated through via an open ended laboratory techniques. It is required before carrying out a purging operation that the computer system be disconnected through the network. The operation of purging is done in an environment where in there is required security aspect. The environment is related to the storage media usage. That means a storage device which is scheduled to be released from a secured facility to a facility that is non - secured. Or the environment should be purged. There is some data eraser software available for the purpose of purging. They are particularly developed for the data to be purged. Apart from these degaussing, data encryption, and overwriting of the data are some other methods that can be employed for the purpose of data remanance. Over-writing of the data removes the data from disk complete and then writes over it. The effect is that it is not possible to recover the data from that part of the storage media device. Media destruction is also another method that can be used for completely removal of data or information from the computer system. Degaussing actually a process where in the magnetic storage media is erased completely. The process of degaussing utilizes the services of a degausser device. This device is so designed so as to be used affectively for purging. There is a list of degausser devices that can be used with the U.S General Administrative services. If the operation is carried out continuously over the storage device it may affect the life of the storage media. In some cases the storage media devices are often rendered inoperable. A software driver is available along with this device for the purpose of easy operating. |
